TechStart Uncork-ED 2010 Event

For the 2nd consecutive year, we are sponsoring the TechStart Education Foundation’s 2010 Uncork-ED Wine Tasting & Charity Gala. The event will be held on Wednesday, September 29, 2010 from 5:30pm-7:30pm at the World Forestry Center, Miller Hall.

The event features a live auction, hors d’oeuvres and complimentary samplings of wines from AlexEli Vineyard and Winery, Amalie Robert Estate, Jacob Williams Winery, Naked Winery, Phelps Creek Vineyards and Sol de Uco.

Tickets are $100 and help support TechStart programs. More info.

Stacked Cases

The not so glamorous or romantic side of the wine business is receiving wine (125 cases at a time!). This task was graciously done in 90 degree Portland, OR heat by Ann, Greg Long and Keith Monaghan today. Receiving a shipment is no walk in the park as the 70′ delivery truck that comes up from Napa, where we do our bulk storage after importing the wine through San Francisco, is too long and tall to use the receiving dock, so the wine is first manually unloaded from the back of the truck, onto the sidewalk and then taken inside into the climate control storage. Thanks again to our great friends Greg Long and Keith Monaghan who volunteered to help Ann while my ankle heals from surgery (ruptured Achilles).

Sol de Uco Wine

Every wine retailer and restaurant partner that carries our wine has acknowledged the smoother and more refined nature of our 2007 Old Vines Malbec and Syrah as well as our 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon. One wine steward cited that, “the wine shows the skills of maturing winemaker.” Gracias to Federico Laborde, our winemaker, for this fine release.

Our latest vintage will arrive in Portland tomorrow - 4/22!

Thursday, April 22 will be a significant milestone in Sol de Uco’s short history as we’ll be receiving our second vintage of wine. We’ll be receiving our first shipment of 2007 Malbec, 2007 Syrah and 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon. More news on this and availability to follow.
Thanks in advance to Keith Monaghan, Greg Long, and Todd Burns for helping Ann receive the wine as each case is unloaded one at a time from the back of a 70’ truck into our storage room at Willamette Wine Storage on NW 23 PL.

Our ship has come in!

Great news! The ship with our container of wine from Argentina has docked in Oakland. The wine has cleared customs and is expected in Napa late next week. (Why it takes a week to get from Oakland to Napa is a mystery to us, too!) Mark your calendars for our launch event on Sat., April 24, 5-9pm, at The Wine Cellar.

A Positive Review in the Oregonian for Sol de Uco

Today marked a significant day for Sol de Uco, as we received a very favorable review of Sol de Uco in today’s Oregonian in the FOODday section. Wine writer, Katherine Cole, described our wine as being, “… an absolute steal from an exotic source.” This is our first review and we completely agree with Katherine Cole’s assessment that, “It is a terrific wine! ”

TechStart Uncork-ED Charity Event Sponsor

Sol de Uco sponsored and participated in last weekend’s Software Association of Oregon (SAO) TechStart Uncork-ED Charity Wine Event at the Portland Museum of Art.

It was a fun event for a great organization focused on furthering technology education within Oregon schools. I had the pleasure of being seated with Matt Nees, SAO President; Stephanie Stricklen, KGW news anchor; and Ron Pernick, co-founder and managing director of Clean Edge. Several people shared their opinion that our wine was their favorite of the bunch.

We’re excited to have Sol de Uco Malbec and Syrah wines picked up by Acme Wine Company as their newest additions their compelling portfolio. Some Acme Wine Company’s brands include Turley, Peay Vineyards, Broadley, and Hartwell. We look forward to collaborating with the Acme Wine Company team to build our brand and market in Washington.

We thank Ole Thompson (former Wine Director for Wild Ginger) for taking the time to consider our wines. We’re also excited to have our wines available at Pike & Western in Pike Place Market. Thanks to Michael Teer and Jason Marvin of Pike & Western for their support.
